Dear Pastor, many of you have asked for some kind of statement to include within your constitution, by-laws or other governing church documents that will address and state your church’s beliefs concerning the recent Supreme Court decision to redefine marriage. The following information is provided as a basis for your church to create a statement that will communicate what your church has decided is God’s truth within your family of faith. Please feel free to take, change, update and use this information in any way that benefits your church.
General Statement of Faith
We accept the Bible as the inspired, infallible and inerrant Word of God and as the ultimate authority in matters of faith, doctrine and Christian living. The ______________ Church accepts “The Baptist Faith and Message” as most recently adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention as an affirmation of our basic Christian beliefs and as a general statement of our faith and doctrine.
Biblical Marriage -
Marriage is a biblical institution and was established by God as clearly described in the scriptures. The Old Testament declares: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”(Genesis 2:24 KJV)
In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ affirmed this truth: “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:4-6 KJV)
Therefore the ______________ Church recognizes that marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in a covenantal commitment. Accordingly, this Church, including its pastor, staff and all members will not participate in same sex unions or same sex marriages, nor shall its property or resources be used for such purposes.
Human Sexuality -
The Bible teaches that moral sexual relations are exercised solely within marriage. Hence, the ______________ Church opposes all forms of sexual immorality, including but not limited to adultery, homosexuality, and pornography.
